Adding peaks

Names and locations of the mountains are taken from www.openstreetmap.org (OSM) and www.geonames.org.

Openstreetmap is like the wikipedia but for maps. Users can contribute their knowledge to this platform. The following steps describe how you can add new peaks to Openstreetmap:

Step 1-3

Open www.openstreetmap.org and sign up or login if you already have an account.

Important: You must select ‘Potlatch 1′ on the drop down of the Edit field (see below)! The new ‘Potlatch 2′ has currently not a good support for adding peaks.

Use ‘Potlatch 1′!

Step 4

Select ‘Edit with Save’

Step 5

Move the map to the position where you like the add a peak. Make sure that the zoom level is in the valid range (there is a warning if not).

Double click to add a new point. You can drag this point to the correct position. Press ‘i’ to open the inspector. There you can see the lat/long coordinates.

Step 6

Select the ‘natural’ type (3 trees) by clicking several times on the icon next to ‘Point’.

Step 7

Select ‘peak’ from the drop down.

Step 8

Add a new attribute by clicking on the ‘+’.

Step 9

Add key ‘name’ and for the value the name of the peak.

Step 10

If you know the elevation of the peak you can add another attribute with the key ‘ele’ and the elevation in meters.

Step 11

Press ‘Save’

Step 12

Add a comment and press ‘Ok’

Done

The new peak will be processed by the OSM backend and visible in the next days.

You can update the peak directory in PeakFinder under Info->Update.
