General
PeakFinder shows a 360° panoramic view from an arbitrary viewpoint of your choice. To render the panoramic views PeakFinder uses an elevation model that is integrated into the App. A database with a peak directory is included as well. For these reasons PeakFinder does not need an online connection for rendering the panoramic view and works completely offline from everywhere in the mountains.
Device support
PeakFinder runs on Apple devices (iOS 4.0 or higher), Android devices with touchscreen (Android 1.6 or higher), Nokia Symbian^3 and Nokia Meego devices. According to the device hardware the behavior of PeakFinder is slightly different. E.g. on devices without a compass (magnetometer) the user must scroll into the current geographic direction manually. On devices without GPS the user must select the viewpoint on Google Maps or by entering the coordinates manually.
Mainscreen
After startup PeakFinder shows the panoramic view from the last visited viewpoint. In the upper third of the screen the peak names are displayed. On the rest of the screen the mountain silhouettes will be shown.
Navigation possibilities
| Scrolling | The panoramic view can be moved with one finger into any direction. Make sure that the horizon is in the middle of the screen in order to see the peak names. If a peak is too much in the upper part of the screen its peak name disappears. Remark: Deactivate the compass for manual scrolling. |
| Zooming | Use the well known two-finger gesture to zoom-in and -out. On Nokia devices use ‘+’ and ‘-’. If you zoom-in you can see more peak names. |
Functions
| Viewpoint selection | Opens a page where you can choose between ‘peak directory’, ‘nearby peaks’, ‘Google Maps’, ‘Entering coordinates manually’ and ‘Favorites’. | |
| Compass | Shows the current geographic direction and the angle of the view. By pressing the compass button, it changes the color to blue and the compass is activated (see below). Remark: The compass is deactivated by default. | |
| GPS | Opens the GPS dialog to get your current position. This allows you the view the panoramic view from your viewpoint. | |
| Info | Opens the info dialog (on Nokia devices this dialog is located in ‘Viewpoint selection’). | |
| Goto | Jumps to the shown position and displays the panoramic view from this viewpoint. You can display the popup with the peak information by touching a peak name or the ‘digital binoculars/cross lines’ (see below). |
GPS Location
After pressing the GPS-button a dialog that informs you about the status of the GPS data appears. Depending on the hardware the device tries to locate your position by WLAN, mobile network and GPS. The dialog shows the accuracy of the data. For a good result PeakFinder needs an accuracy of 100m. But the user is free to show also a panoramic view if the data accuracy is worse than 100m.
Tipp: If the accuracy is bad make a few steps and move your position. If you are outside in the nature make sure that you have a free view to the sky (in order to get the data from the GPS satellites).
Compass
By pressing the compass button PeakFinder shows you the panoramic view of the direction your device is heading. If the device is in horizontal position (e.g. lying on a table) the horizon is centered automatically. As soon as you bring the device in a vertical position (like a photo camera) the accelerometer controls the horizon.
Digital binoculars/Cross lines
Because the space for the displayed peak names is limited not all peak names can be displayed. PeakFinder shows the most prominent peaks first. Other peak names can be displayed with the use of the ‘digital binoculars’ on iOS devices:

On Android and Nokia cross lines are displayed:
The ‘digital binoculars’ reps. the ‘cross lines’ can be displayed by tapping once on the silhouette lines of the panoramic view. The red dots mark the peak names. Just move the ‘digital binoculars’ or the ‘cross line’ to a red dot and you’ll see the peak information in the popup. To close the ‘digital binoculars’ tap once outside of the binoculars and to close the ‘cross lines’ tap somewhere on the screen.
Standortwahl
| Peak directory | Lists all peaks sorted by countries. Use the search function to search for a peak name. |
| Nearby peaks | Lists all peaks in a distance of 25km of the current viewpoint. |
| Maps | Opens a view with the maps of Google resp. Nokia. The map is centered to the current viewpoint. You can select any viewpoint you like from here. Use the search function for searching e.g. a city. Remark: This view uses the internet connection. Be aware that connection costs by your mobile provider can be the result. |
| Enter Coordinates | Shows a dialog where you can enter coordinates manually in the WGS84 format. This dialog is mainly used for iPod Touch. |
| Favorites | Lists by default some predefined favorites. Use the ‘+’ to add an entry with the current selected viewpoint. To delete an entry swipe with your finger form left to right or opposite on iOS devices. On Android or Nokia devices touch the item for a few seconds. |
